The Bitless Bridles Available
All the bitless bridles I have used work under the same principles. First to relieve pain! And that is the most important fact and goal. Then there is the how. The two most popular bridles cross the straps under the chin and attach to the reins. The design I prefer is the Barefoot bridle because they made these straps round instead of flat and the headband is padded for more comfort too. I feel they offer a quicker release for the horse which is very important for communication and learning. However, I know of many people who have used Dr. Cook’s bitless bridle with success too.

There are also side pull designs which are okay but I really don’t care for them in the end (it’s just a gut thing), but you might! 8 out of 10 times I just use a rope halter mostly because I am in the beginning of the training process. And then I just attach a set of reins because I don’t mind that it doesn’t look like a “real” bridle. I don’t put a lot of emphasis on fashion these days! :0)
Is there a transition when you change to Bitless?
That’s the great part, No there is no hesitation from any horse but happiness! A recent example from a new boarder who came straight from the hunter jumper circuit where they always used bridles with bits (ouch!), simply purchased a Barefoot bridle put it on and was shocked that there was no hesitation from her horse and the myth that was instilled to her regarding bits vanished! It was wonderful! And the list of stories just like this one is very, very long and growing!
