Homeopathic Remedy - Ledum for Itching

by Kim Barry
(Canada)

I have been told that using Ledum in the horses drinking water will help with the itch and swelling from bug bites.

Do you know this to be true?

Thank you,
Kim Barry

Answer:

"Even though Ledum is excellent for bug bites...it should not be put into a communal drinking trough unless the whole herd is having the same trouble that correspond to the symptoms of Ledum...otherwise you can get the remedy 'proving' itself and can cause some of the symptoms you would be trying to treat in sensitive individuals.

Homeopathic remedies are best used on a case by case basis...individualized to the animal unless all are exhibiting same symptoms. And then the remedy should be discontinued when you see it is acting by the symptoms changing."

It's difficult to give advice on just a little bit of information about each of your animals...if your horses are reacting to bug bites with hives it is more than likely an underlying immune function problem and should be treated as a chronic issue with a qualified veterinary Homeopath otherwise you will at best be only palliating the symptoms with Ledum.

If however you simply have an above normal bug situation on your property - and don't want to dose each animal separately then putting a pill or two in a large water trough for about one week to try would probably do no harm...however, please clean out the trough thoroughly after the week so the animals do not keep self dosing as that could create problems.

No matter how gentle and side-effect free Homeopathic medicines are - they should always be treated as medicines and given if and only when they are called for (in other words indicated by specific symptoms).

If you need anymore help please contact a veterinary Homeopath or me directly and I will be more than happy to help you further.

ledum
by: Kim Barry (again)

Because all horses are bothered by bug bites, swelling, iching would it not be the easiest way to get the ledem into all the horses? My horses can't wait for me to scratch the areas where they can't reach. I don't know anything about ledum and not sure if it's the way to go.I only have two horses. I am trying to do things as naturally as possible, but the bugs are very bad where we live.(surrounded by water)so I do spray them and put on fly masks for the black flies. Other flies are not a problem, as we keep our pasture as clear of manure as possible.
