Horse training advise from Winter Storms Ransom(great grandaughter of Northern Dancer)

The worst advise we were given by a boarding stable was that there is no need to give horses water during the winter as they can eat the snow!

Those folks should lose their horses. If you hear that don't board your horse there!

poor boarding situations

If i may add its the same people who wanted to put up a portable garage tent(tarp) for their boarding horses and refused to feed them hay unless winter because....they can graze.....Of course your paying for hay year round. Doesnt take a genius to know that northern ontario winters snowfall would collapse the roof ontop of the horses...plus the winds would take it down.

Great reminder!

Thanks Jamie for sharing this myth about watering horses in the winter months. It's amazing that this information still lurks about in the horse world.

The only tiny truth is horse's will eat snow for some water intake but it's never enough to meet their requirements. So water must be supplied at all times.

I think the problem with some boarding facilities is that they are too chintzy to buy a water heater and pay for the electricity to heat the water so it doesn't freeze!

Such a shame.
