There is a big downfall with traditional riding lessons where you just get on and learn how to steer, stop and sit pretty. Anyone can look good on a well schooled horse. Mostly because these horses are fixing your cues along the way! :0) But what happens when the horse you are riding doesn’t do what you think they should? You asked to go left but they went right. After all a horse is a thinking, feeling animal not a machine.

Let’s look at this in another life way. Say you bring home a puppy. Do you expect and want that puppy to just know how to sit, stay, fetch and not chew your shoes? Or do you first learn how to feed, care and understand their needs? Without learning about that animal’s needs you would not be able to identify or see the difference in illness vs. unwanted behavior either.

We feel horseback riding lessons should address the horse’s needs first then the riders. This is for the benefit of both parties. It is an injustice to the rider to not be given the tools to understand how a horse feels and learns as well as it is an injustice to the horse to have someone crawl on their back without this knowledge first.
