Icicles On My Horse

Aug/2010 - Rumi's shelter & move in day
I fell in love with a Spotted Saddle Horse! He's the sweetest gentle soul... He's with us now for about half a year. His name is Rumi, after a Persian Sufi from 1200-something... He came from Tennessee, originally.
This morning I found him covered in icicles. They made a cute tingling sound when he walked... This is my first winter with him. I remember everything you taught me about their hair and winter coat etc. but I just want to check with you that he is okay... it looked cold! That's probably humanizing the horse... I would be cold if icicles were hanging of me... His coat is nice and big and fluffy. At least the parts that are not frozen! The boys have a nice sheltered run in and also trees for shelter against the wind.

Have a lovely day, Anna Mae
Hi Anna Mae,
Great question!
The answer is there is nothing to worry about providing the horse is healthy, has adequate food and proper shelter available and is not standing around shivering. From the pictures it appears he is healthy and happy (How old is Rumi?).
I see he is with two other horses, just make sure he is not having to compete for shelter. The longer shaggy coats on some horses, the more you will see this in our cold Canadian winter climates.
