Used Horse Trailers & Hauling Horses
There are many good used horse trailers available BUT please make sure they are safety checked by a qualified & certified individual.Every province and country likely has there own rules about this so I can only speak confidently about my situation. Recently I had my used horse trailer (about 9yrs old) safety checked and for a small price of under $200.00 I am again reassured that everything works the way it should and my horse will be safe upon it. Things to really look for are rotten floor boards, brakes working, all lights work and particularly sharp objects on floor mats or side boards. As well make sure the trailer has trailer tires and not car tires installed. I have seen good used horse trailers but as well I have seen not so great brand new ones! Most horse trailers are designed for people and not for the safety of horses. Did you know that many studies have shown that horses trailer better facing backwards than forwards? If the horse is facing forwards, he will try to shift his weight back and prop his front legs out in front of him to prepare for the next braking. This is the opposite of a relaxed stance on the forehand, but if he is afraid of the next braking throwing him on his face, he can't afford to stand relaxed facing forwards. He will have to spread his hind legs farther apart, which is very uncomfortable for him to do. The hind end is not designed to stand for any length of time with the hind feet propped out to the side to provide stability in turns; ligaments are stretched uncomfortably. All forward facing 2-horse trailers will throw a horse forward during braking, threatening its head, chest, and balance. Once a horse experiences traveling facing the rear, and that acceleration and deceleration no longer throw him, he drops his head, leans forward and stands very much as he would in his own stable throughout the trailer's journey. He stays in a balanced posture because his center of gravity is directly over that part of the trailer which moves the least [the axles]. During braking in the rear face, the horse's haunches drop a little then his head drops and leans a little further forward over his forehand. That's it. No head throwing. No scrambling. If the braking was really hard (for example, a sudden stop against a barrier collision), the horse's buttocks, not his head, would bear the brunt.

My Stock Type Horse Trailer

I find this open kind of horse trailer really helpful in teaching a horse how to load. It is less intimidating and they can easily get on, turn around and get off. Which builds a lot of confidence, plus they can travel rear facing too.
Here is a trailer designed for allowing two horses to stand backwards! Very cool! Click here
