Why do horses behave so differently with some people?

Many people have witnessed their horse behave very differently with a child, or a person who is suffering from an emotional or mental challenge. Some want to place all this in a mystical theology and others choose to explain with science. I personally sit closer to the scientific side but I am also very aware that there are energies about that no explanation can currently be found (or more accurately, be agreed upon). Only when a direct experience happens to you personally does the unknown suddenly become real.
Here is what I have experienced and can personally say about this subject.

First with the understanding (and for some still just a belief) that everything is made up of energy. Science has proven and agrees with this. While everything “is” energy it also vibrates differently depending upon the object or sentient beings perspective (and how it senses its own environment). For example a rock’s energy vibration would be different than a horse and the horse’s vibration different than a human. The common problem we humans encounter is the need to SEE and TOUCH this and thus denying the sense of internal FEEL or intuition that encompasses it. (We can’t see or touch the radio wave, yet we know it exists!)

A common energy that a child and/or a challenged individual could share is that they are more able to BE IN THE MOMENT. They are not consumed with the past or future tense. This vibration is matched easily with our horses because they too stand in the same place of time. Then add to it the innocence, sometimes vulnerability and often NO AGENDA offered by the person and you have a horse that can easily understanding, relate, comfort and bond.

Here is a very interesting source regarding the animals of our planet and how they interact with it all.

There is no need for me anymore to make such a big deal out of wondering why we are attracted or comforted by animals such as horses when we consider the vibrational connection to well being they are naturally a part of. They know that well being abounds and are a conduit for us to feel it too. That is why when we are with them often our discord from the day’s events (emotional upsets) seem to fade away allowing us to re-connect with positive energy which inevitably helps us feel better. And we all want and yearn for more of that in our lives! See it’s not so mysterious after all!

being in the moment
by: janiene

Well said Elaine.

Horses are far more atuned to energy as this is one of their survival tools. Humans used to have this ability (some still do) but we as humans have lost this ability in general as we no longer have to rely on it for our day to day survival.

Because horses have this ability to read us they can sum you up before you even open the gate. Are you a threat to me, are you easy to be with, or as Elaine suggested are you in the moment. This I have personally found to be a very important tool to connect with horses. It works a treat to calm horses down if they get anxious.(especially working with brood mares, and young horses.) Yawning helps too.

I have read Linda Kohanov's book "Riding between the worlds", and "Way of the horse" She speaks of incongruency ie: pretending to be happy, confident etc when your not. Horses aren't fooled by these subtilties as easily as humans are, as they can sense the true energy you are giving off.
Be it fear, aggression, love compassion etc. I believe this is why one person can connect with a particular horse when another just doesn't have a hope. This is true in human relationships also, we just don't give it much thought as to why we don't feel comfortable with a certain person or visa versa.

I learn't a valuable lesson from my first horse Spencer. I always mused about my relationship with him. I noticed Some days if I was in a hurry, or had, had a bad day he wasn't as cooperative as he usually was. I realised what I was doing. I was being incongruent for his benefit, trying to be happy thinking I was doing him a favour. I realised what I was doing, and from then on I was more conscious of my energy and emotions. I would actually tell him I was having a bad day, but it wasn't his fault, He obviously sensed the change in energy when i got it off my chest and would sigh relaxing. (probably thinking thank god for that.) I hadn't heard of Linda then. Her books confirmed this for me.

So when I'm with my new horse Yogi, I am conscious of being in the moment and being congruent in my emotions and it's amazing what you can achieve. They are a lot happier for it.

A link to see some photos
by: Catherine Howard-Lightstone

Hi,
Please don't publish these photos yet...I have to get permission from the parents! But I thought you might find them interesting, is there an email address I can send them to you or the link to see them?
It shows my rag taggle herd with two very intellectually challenged adults. This was the young ladies first encouter with the animals....they were amazingly gentle, patient and very cuddly...the horse is ben, who is generally the one to yank one by the collar, chew off buttons or pull my t-shirt from the bottom up over my head.....a really cheeky horse! Look how gentle and sweet he is with her!Cheers,
Kate

More research in needed
by: Elaine Polny

Absolutely, the sense of smell could easily be a part of all this too! Like you said there is so little research available and being done that we all need to share our experiences to help provide it!
As for the abandoning of the sick in the wild, here is how it was once explained to me. Because animals know and want to stay in the state of well being that when they come across something that is not vibrating in the same well being state, they don't have a problem saying NO I don't want that in my life, thus being able to turn away from it. Then there is the whole survival of the species as a group to consider.
On a human perspective, it’s sort of like being in a room filled with happy healthy people and then in walks someone completely unhealthy, sneezing and coughing all over the place. Would you want to sit next to this person or leave and get as far away from this illness as you can?

Equine reactions
by: Catherine

Hi,
yes...I agree with the energy theory but also I think it has to do with an animals hightened sense of smell. We have dogs and cats that can sniff out cancer and "smell" oncoming siezures. Maybe the chemical imbalance in a special needs brain can be smelled by our equines?
I have a little jenny who adores little children, and she is the best of mothers...not sure if 'littles' give off their own new smell? Although, I can't explain her complete fascination with my pair of white hairy mukluks! (Her first or second foal is our little white "Bindi", now about 5 yrs old...the only connection I can find!)
I think there is so much more research to be done in this area by observation and truly learning from our animal friends. They show so much more understanding and compassion than most humans in this situation. Although in contrast in the wild a sick or malformed young will often be abandoned...its very confusing.
Cheers,
Kate
